Franklin Donald: Building a New Life Through the Power of a Second Chance

April 7, 2026

South Carolina has the lowest recidivism rate in the country – according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections, but successful reentry doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens when returning citizens like Franklin Donald are empowered by their community and local organizations like Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina.

This Second Chance Month—a time to raise awareness around the challenges and barriers one faces when reentering society—Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina (GIUMSC) is proud to highlight the success story of our very own Pathway Home 4 (PH4) program participant, Franklin Donald.

After serving time at Livesay Correctional Institution, Franklin Donald returned home to loved ones eager to support him but was lacking the resources to do so. That’s where Goodwill's PH4 program came in.

With the help of our PH4 team, Donald received essential wraparound support services; from work readiness training to financial and transportation assistance.  These services allowed Donald to shift his focus from daily stressors to the bigger picture— a fulfilling life after incarceration.

Today, Donald thrives as a car owner and full-time commercial driver, making $25 an hour with no signs of slowing down on his path to success.  “You are confined only by the walls you build yourself,” he shares.

Donald's renewed outlook on life is a testament to the power of self-determination and the importance of holistic support through programs like PH4. Please join us in celebrating Donald’s success in reconnecting with the local workforce!
