What is WIOA?

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a federal program administered throughout South Carolina by the Workforce Division of the Department of Commerce. WIOA supersedes the Workforce Investment Act of 1998. WIOA has a statewide and local board appointed by the Governor that is comprised of business owners, state government officials, educators and private citizens with guided policy for all WIOA-funded programs. WIOA programs help businesses meet their need for skilled workers and provide individuals with access to training that helps them prepare for work.

Purpose

The purpose of WIOA is to better align the workforce system with education and economic development in an effort to create a collective response to economic and labor market challenges on the national, state, and local levels.
