Powering Sustainability: Goodwill Launches Battery Recycling Pilot with Redwood Materials

June 12, 2025

By Melanie Gearhart, Director of Sustainability

As we continue to look for ways to divert unsold or unsellable items from the landfill, we are eager to explore partnership opportunities with innovative and sustainable businesses.

Several months ago, we were introduced to Redwood Materials, a growing leader in lithium-ion battery recycling. After many strategic and logistical conversations, we will launch a battery recycling pilot program in June in several stores.

Redwood Materials adds another resource for us to recycle electronics and electronic waste. This is in addition to our long-standing partnership with Dell Reconnect and our internal electronics-recycling program.

Through Dell Reconnect, we have diverted over 260,000 pounds of electronics from the waste stream. And our refurbished electronics program, launched in 2023, is growing steadily.

Speaking of electronics, did you know you can buy refurbished phones, tablets, laptops, accessories and much more through shopgoodwill.com?
