For years, Carl Long searched for stability in a world that often felt uncertain. Like so many individuals facing barriers to employment, Carl wanted more than just a job – he wanted a future. But without the right support, finding a meaningful career path felt out of reach.

That changed when Carl came to Goodwill.

At the time, Carl was working weekends in food service, earning $14/hour and struggling to make ends meet while living a life of homelessness. Despite the challenges he faced, Carl never lost sight of his desire to move forward. He knew that if he could gain new skills and credentials, a better life was awaiting him.

With Goodwill’s support and encouragement, Carl took a critical first step; earning his G.E.D. This achievement became a turning point, opening doors he once thought were closed. Through job training and career guidance, Carl transitioned out of food service and into a new field – unarmed security – a role that offered great stability and opportunity.

Goodwill’s philosophy of A job, a Better job, a Career became more than just words for Carl; it became his roadmap. Through determination, resilience, and hard work, he moved from a job to a better job, increasing his wages and gaining the freedom of a weekday schedule. The change meant more than a paycheck – it meant balance, consistency, and dignity.

He is now enrolled at Piedmont Technical College, majoring in Human Services. His work continues toward a career to fit his passion for helping others.

Perhaps more importantly, Carl gained something he once lacked: a place he now proudly calls “home”. After years of uncertainty, he secured housing where he can rest peacefully and safely – a foundation that allows him to continue building toward an even brighter future.
