RETAIL GRADUATE OF THE YEAR
Michelle "Shelly" Scruggs
It may have been a serious of unfortunate events that led her to Goodwill, but Shelly Scruggs considers the ultimate destination very fortunate indeed.
Shelly moved to South Carolina from Michigan to care for an injured family member, and soon had to take on additional nursing duties when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. With responsibilities pressing down on her, Shelly was eventually unable to make child support payments for her son and was incarcerated. Upon her release, Shelly was given a position in Goodwill’s training program at the Haywood Road Distribution Center in Greenville and was eventually hired as a full-time Goodwill employee.
Shelly welcomed the chance to begin to build a new life. She committed herself to doing her job to the best of her ability and quickly became a leader at Haywood Road. She began to save for her own car and apartment, but sacrificed her personal goals and savings to her generous spirit when a family member needed help. Undeterred, Shelly continued to press relentlessly toward her goals. She was able to purchase a car through Goodwill’s Wheels to Work program, which gave her much-needed freedom from dependence on others.
Shelly’s greatest joy came when she was able to obtain custody of her son, now a teenager, and move him to South Carolina.
“Every person has two families,” Shelly says with tears in her eyes as she talks about her experiences. “One family is the one you’re born with. The second family is the one you choose, and the one that chooses you. Goodwill is my family.” « Back |
