RALPH WALKER GRADUATE OF THE YEAR
EMZIE SMITH
Emzie Smith can put his Goodwill experience into just a few words: “To sum it up, that was my family.”
From a boy who grew up with plenty of opportunities to take the wrong path to a man who has made the decision over and over to do what is right, Emzie calls his time with Goodwill one of the defining points of his life. Having people who believed in him and the future that lay ahead of him helped Emzie believe he could make a change in his life and work toward the dreams that had always seemed to be out of reach.
Emzie started his career with Goodwill in the Food Service training program, but mastering the skills in one program was not enough for him. He took every opportunity to learn new jobs and new skills, and soon mastered them all. As Emzie matured professionally, he was also taking personal strides and learning more about himself each day.
“The training program trains you on how to be a citizen,” Emzie asserts. “How to be respectful, how to care for others, how to be concerned. To put yourself aside. It teaches you loyalty – loyalty to yourself, loyalty to the company, loyalty to others.”
Emzie’s enthusiasm and exemplary work ethic caught attention and he was hired as a member of the management team at the Liquidation Center in July 2007. Emzie was thrilled to become an employee of the company he loved, but there were other opportunities awaiting him. Emzie eventually accepted a position with Stevens Aviation, where he is now putting his military training and natural aptitude for electronics and machinery to work on a job he loves.
“If anyone were to ask me what was it like working at Goodwill, I say they live by the name. They apply “goodwill” to everyone and it’ll make you really look at yourself. I know my motto for Goodwill is exactly what if says, ‘Goodwill. Goodwill to others.’”
