CELEBRATE THE SEASON WITH AN END-OF-YEAR TAX WRITE-OFF
The holiday season leave your wallet a bit lighter? You can get a little money back from Uncle Sam by donating gently used clothing and other unwanted items to Goodwill Industries for an end-of-year tax write-off.
By cleaning your closets and garages, you get more than a tax deduction. Goodwill uses the revenue from your donations for its education and career services that help people prepare for, find, and be successful in employment. Given the current economic conditions, these services are in greater demand than ever.
“End the holiday season and start the new year off right by giving the gift of hope,” says Patrick Michaels, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina. “Every donation to Goodwill helps make 2009 a better year for thousands of individuals who need help finding employment and can benefit from Goodwill’s services.”
Goodwill accepts clothing, household items, toys, computers, cars and other vehicles – even those holiday gifts that weren’t quite right. Financial contributions are gratefully accepted and can be made online at www.goodwillsc.org or sent to Goodwill’s corporate office at 115 Haywood Road in Greenville. Goodwill is also a safe and responsible choice for computers and other electronic equipment. Goodwill recycles these items so that they are not disposed of in landfills, and ensures that personal information is never at risk by crushing hard drives or wiping them to the standards of the Department of Defense. For more information or to find the Goodwill near you, visit www.goodwillsc.org, or call (864) 351-0100.
Donations are sold in Goodwill’s 26 retail stores throughout the Upstate and Midlands. Revenues generated by the sale of donated merchandise in Goodwill’s retail stores and financial contributions from the community support Goodwill’s job training and placement programs that help people become independent citizens in our community. In the past year, Goodwill assisted 16,270 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $48.4 million through the wages of the 2,897 people placed into employment.
Donors interested in claiming tax deductions should keep itemized lists of their donations and obtain a donation receipt when they drop off items at any Goodwill donation center. The Internal Revenue Service allows a deduction for each item, but the donor determines each item’s value. For general guidelines on valuation of donations, visit www.goodwillsc.org.
