Goodwill Recognized as 2008 “Industry Leader” by National Safety Council

The National Safety Council (NSC) has announced that Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina has been honored with a 2008 Industry Leader Award for achieving the best safety performance within its industry.

The Industry Leader Awards recognize the top 5% of member companies, units, and facilities that have met the criteria and qualified for the National Safety Council’s 2008 Occupational Excellence Achievement Award.  Winners are selected based on NAICS code, lowest total incidence rate, and employee work hours.

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is one of 66 companies honored with the 2008 Industry Leader Award.  It is the first Goodwill nationwide to be honored with the Industry Leader Award, and one of only two companies in South Carolina to receive the award in 2008.

Earlier this year, Goodwill was honored with the National Safety Council’s Occupational Excellence Achievement Award for outstanding safety performance and the Million Hours Award, recognizing Goodwill’s achievement of over one million work hours without a lost-time accident.

“Being named an Industry Leader is one of the highest honors a safety program can be given,” says Bill Childs, Goodwill’s Director of Safety.  “This award is a direct reflection of the commitment each and every Goodwill associate has made to creating and maintaining a safe workplace.”

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina helps people with disabilities and special needs become independent citizens through education, training, and employment leading to job placement.  In the past year, Goodwill assisted 16,270 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $48.4 million through the wages of the 2,897 people placed into employment.
