Goodwill Recognized as 2009 “Industry Leader” for Retail by National Safety Council

The National Safety Council (NSC) has announced that Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is the recipient of the 2009 Industry Leader Award for achieving the best safety performance within the retail industry in the category of over 1,000,000 hours worked.

The Industry Leader Awards recognize the top 5% of member companies, units, and facilities that have met the criteria and qualified for the National Safety Council’s 2009 Occupational Excellence Achievement Award.  Winners are selected based on NAICS code, lowest total incidence rate, and employee work hours.

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is one of 101 companies nationwide honored with the 2009 Industry Leader Award, and one of only six companies in South Carolina to receive the award in 2009.  Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina is one of only 11 companies to receive consecutive Industry Leader Awards in 2008 and 2009.

“Being named an Industry Leader is one of the highest honors a safety program can be given,” says Bill Childs, Goodwill’s Director of Safety.  “This award is a direct reflection of the commitment each and every Goodwill associate has made to creating and maintaining a safe workplace.”

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina helps people with disabilities and special needs become independent citizens through education, training, and employment leading to job placement.  In the past year, Goodwill assisted 17,849 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $47 million through the wages of the 2,839 people placed into employment.
