Goodwill Hosts Summer Work Program for 75 Youth

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands SC is currently hosting a Summer Youth Employment Program funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) through the Workforce Investment Act that will provide training for 75 young adults ages 18 to 24.  These paid training programs will prepare youth for careers in either Food Service or Computer De-Manufacturing and Goodwill will work to place them into meaningful full-time employment after they complete the program.

Youth involved in the Food Service program will receive paid training and work experience in local area restaurants including K&W Cafeteria, Sonic, and Long John Silvers.  Youth participating in the Computer De-manufacturing Program will receive paid training to dismember and recycle computers at the Goodwill location on Haywood Road.  There will be a total of five training sessions offered this summer, with the final session concluding in September. All participants will receive classroom instruction in work readiness skills, as well as paid work experience training.

Food Service and Computer De-Manufacturing have been identified as high-growth, high-demand career paths which have the potential to help graduates of the Goodwill program achieve employment stability and financial independence. Youth who participate in the Goodwill Summer Youth Employment program will create a foundation on which to build a career.

Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina helps people with disabilities and disadvantages become independent citizens through job training and job placement.  Last year, Goodwill assisted 16,270 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $48.4 million through the wages of the 2,897 people placed into employment.
