Goodwill, Boy Scouts Partner on Computer Recycling Event

Goodwill Industries and Boy Scout Troop 705 will host the 1 st Annual “Green Your Machine” event on April 26 th in Simpsonville. The event, which coordinates with “Earth Day” on April 22 nd, encourages people to donate their unwanted computers and accessories to Goodwill to be recycled instead of sending potentially dangerous e-waste to landfills.

The event will be held at 915 South Street in Simpsonville, in front of the Goodwill Store and Computer Works. In addition to the opportunity to donate, families can also enjoy a number of fun and educational activities on site, including face painting, food and drinks, and e-friendly giveaways courtesy of Greenville County’s Solid Waste Division and DHEC.

“Green Your Machine” is the creation of local teenager Jonathan Gawrych. Gawrych, a member of Boy Scout Troop 705 and an Eagle Scout candidate, planned and implemented the donation drive and educational event as his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. Gawrych’s interest in both computers and the potential hazards they pose to the environment contributed to the development of the event.

Goodwill refurbishes and resells donated computer systems to the public through its Computer Works store. Components that are broken or outdated are demanufactured and recycled through a process that guarantees that none of the metals, plastics, and other elements contained in CPUs and monitors find their way into landfills where they can become environmental hazards. Goodwill ensures that the personal information of donors is never at risk by either crushing or wiping all hard drives to the standards of the Department of Defense.

Donors can drop off their old computers throughout the year at any of Goodwill’s 36 Donation Center locations in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina. Revenues generated through the sale of donated merchandise, including computers, fund Goodwill’s job training and placement programs that help people prepare for, obtain, and be successful in employment, fostering economic self-sufficiency. In the past year, Goodwill has assisted almost 14,000 people in their quest for independence and created an economic impact of over $47 million through the wages of over 2,800 people placed into employment.
