Be Eco-friendly and Serve Your Community by Donating to Goodwill This Earth Day
April 22, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, and one of the best ways people can be environmentally responsible is by donating and shopping at Goodwill®. With their donations and purchases, individuals are helping create much-needed job opportunities in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina. Revenues from the sale of donations help Goodwill provide job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people with disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and others facing challenges to finding employment.
“For more than 37 years, Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina has been an environmental pioneer in the Upstate and Midlands,” said Patrick Michaels, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina. “Goodwill has helped divert millions of pounds of items from landfills and created thousands of jobs for people who need it most.”
Donating items that are no longer needed to Goodwill is a simple act of community service and charity that anyone can perform. Donations allow Goodwill to provide much-needed employment programs, such as training for careers in specific disciplines like nursing or retail, or the services and resources available at the ten Goodwill Job Connections in the Upstate and Midlands. Shopping at Goodwill stores is also a great way to save money and extend the lifecycle of items.
Consumers can also donate computers and computer equipment to Goodwill for free through the Reconnect partnership with Dell. Through this program, computers and equipment are either refurbished and resold or broken down into parts to be recycled by Dell’s recycling partners. Reconnect helps Goodwill train and hire employees in green technology jobs and helps people dispose of unwanted computers in an environmentally responsible way.
“By donating to and shopping at Goodwill, you are supporting our commitment to preserving the environment and helping people earn paychecks and support themselves and their families,” said Michaels. “With your support, we will continue to strengthen the economic health of our community.”
Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina helps people with disabilities and special needs become independent citizens through education, training, and employment leading to job placement. In the past year, Goodwill assisted 17,849 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $47 million through the wages of the 2,839 people placed into employment.
