Top 5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could Donate to Goodwil
Goodwill makes spring cleaning easier; donate everything from computers to cell phones to cars

Goodwill® makes spring cleaning easy. This spring, thousands of people will clean out their closets and send bags of unwanted clothes and other household items to Goodwill stores in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina.  But Goodwill can help clean out more than just your clothes drawers. From the office to the garage, here are the top five things you might not realize Goodwill accepts:

1. Computers: Whether they are in working condition or not, desktop computers and laptops contain parts that are hazardous to the environment if not disposed of properly.  Through a partnership with Dell, Goodwill stores in the Upstate and Midlands of South Carolina now accept computers to be recycled, free of charge. Stores will also accept donations of computer accessories such as keyboards, mice and USB drives.

2. Cell phones: When people upgrade to new cell phones, they often keep the old, unused phones in junk drawers or throw them away.  In fact, unused cell phones make up one of the fastest-growing kinds of trash in America.  Goodwill works with partners to collect and recycle phones.

3. Gift cards: Holiday gift card recipients — who do not plan to spend those cards for whatever reason — can clean out their wallets and donate those pieces of plastic to Goodwill.  Billions of dollars in gift cards go unused every year; now consumers can put them to good use by donating cards to Goodwill.

4. Cars: Many Goodwill agencies accept vehicle donations, which are sold to fund job-training and community-based programs.  Many Goodwill locations also accept bicycles, boats, trucks, RVs — even airplanes!

5. Money: Individuals who already have clean closets can still help.  Goodwill assists millions of Americans in finding employment. Monetary donations to Goodwill are tax-deductible and Goodwill is consistently ranked among top charities.  Eighty-four percent of revenue goes directly toward supporting and growing critical community-based programs and services.  Donate online at www.goodwillsc.org.

Goodwill is one of the nation’s top five most valuable and recognized nonprofit brands and has earned the trust and support of 64 million donors in the United States and Canada.  In the past year, Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina assisted 17,849 people in their quest for independence and created a potential economic impact of over $47 million through the wages of the 2,839 people placed into employment.
