MIDLANDS SUCCESS AWARD
DARRELL EBERHARDT
For Darrell Eberhardt, an accident eighteen years ago changed everything. His injuries left him legally blind and with frontal lobe brain damage, and Darrell worked hard during his recovery to relearn a number of skills and abilities. Unfortunately, more challenges and disappointments lay ahead for Darrell when he was ready to return to work and live independently.
“Every time something would come along that would seem to be positive, it would get going but usually fell through,” Darrell says of his search for employment. His disabilities limited his employment options and companies that had suitable positions were not willing to take a chance with him. Then Darrell was referred to Goodwill through Project Hope, and a door finally opened for Darrell.
“Goodwill has been the best thing that’s happened to me ever since my accident,” Darrell says. “ They’ve given me an opportunity to progress. They’ve given me a great opportunity to show and demonstrate the skills and abilities I have.”
First as a client at Goodwill’s Clearance Center in West Columbia and now as a Goodwill employee, Darrell is a constant inspiration to everyone who comes in contact with him. He is thrilled to have the opportunity to be back in the workplace and knows that the things he appreciates most are things many people take for granted.
“I’m just beaming inside because just everything about the Goodwill experience has been positive…Goodwill, I mean, just their name says it all.”
