LLOYD AUTEN ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR
OMEGA WASHINGTON MARTIN
If Omega Martin described her experience with Goodwill in one word, she might choose the word “chance”.
For Omega, that’s just what Goodwill was. It was a chance for her to demonstrate a steady work history, a chance for her for overcome personal issues that haunted her, and a chance tobegin the new life that lay ahead. Omega seized the chance that Goodwill offered her and refused to let go in spite of the obstacles that faced her.
“When I came in through the doors of Goodwill, I was broken down,” Omega recalls. “I was really going through some difficulties in my life and I was almost ready to give up. But I brushed myself off and I put myself back together again and I went to work.”
And work she did. With a determination that nothing could shake, Omega set out to learn and master every job that presented itself. Her fantastic commitment to herself and her work garnered attention, and soon Omega was hired as a Goodwill employee – her goal all along.
“That was the best moment of my life because I had a 40-hour job – something I’ve never had. I had benefits – something I’ve never had. And, I had people that cared about me, and that’s another thing I never had at a job – people that care and that were there for me.
“Never give up,” Omega advises anyone who is working toward goals of their own. “You can fall down, but still get back up. I fell lots of times, but I brushed myself off and I got back up. And I had people standing with me and I thank them for it so much, because I couldn’t have done it without them.”
