JOB CONNECTION SUCCESS OF THE YEAR
PENNY JACKSON
Penny Jackson wasn’t sure what to expect when she visited the new Job Connection in Anderson for the first time in June 2006. “I saw the sign that said “Job Connection” and it was a curiosity thing,” she remembers. “I was out of work and looking, so I said ‘Let me go ahead and they can tell me what they do.’” What Penny found was a resource to help her explore and pursue employment opportunities in the area, and the outlet that eventually led to her current job as a Donation Center Attendant at Goodwill’s Store #7 in Anderson.
For Penny, the Job Connection “was like a little blessing, because I had looked for months and months for a job.” With 22 years of experience with Wal-Mart, including retiring as the Cash Office Manager, Penny had a wealth of experience to draw on in her job search. Unfortunately, her experience at times was a liability and she heard over and over that she was overqualified for the positions she was applying for or needed a different set of skills.
Penny was not going to let these barriers stand in her way. Instead, she enrolled in computer classes to familiarize herself with current technology and got involved in Anderson’s adult education programs to gain new skills and knowledge. Eventually, it was Penny’s persistence and determination to succeed that led Employment Specialist Judy Murch to recommend her for the open position at the Goodwill store in Anderson.
Penny was hired in October 2007, and has excelled in the position. Though she is pleased with her new job, Penny continues to explore opportunities and hopes to advance within the Goodwill organization. “Goodwill is willing to take that chance with you,” Penny says. “I like that.”
