FOOD SERVICE GRADUATE OF THE YEAR

Onaray "Ray" Hill

The first thing people notice about Onaray Hill is his smile. It is his trademark; an outward sign of Ray’s brightand passionate personality. Ray was born with a disability that limited his development and has a speech impediment that sometimes makes communication difficult. But when it comes to expressing his joy and satisfaction with his life, Ray’s smile speaks for itself.

Ray enrolled in the Food Service Training Program at Goodwill’s Subway restaurant on Haywood Rd to fulfill a requirement for his occupational diploma from Greenville County Schools. He had experience working in the cafeteria at his school, and he was ready to jump right in to the tasks that awaiting him at Subway. Ray began by wrapping finished sandwiches and manning the cookie trays, but by the time he graduated from the program he knew every job – from assisting with bread and cookie baking to making a sandwich from start to finish.

Working with customers on a daily basis gave Ray the opportunity to overcome some of his shyness and build his confidence. His communication skills increased as he conversed with customers and colleagues; his smile would shine as he talked with customers or joked with colleagues.

Ray’s skills have continued to develop in his new job with K&W Cafeteria. He often jumps in to help in unexpected ways and has proven that he is a very dependable and pleasant employee. He has risen in seniority at K&W and is able to enjoy a schedule that includes weekends off. Ray’s experiences have helped him learn to stand on his own; he relies more on himself and less on others every day.

Ray Hill has many accomplishments to be proud of and will have many more in the years to come. That’s more than enough to keep a big smile on his face.
